Quick Photoshop Tutorial
This is a quick tutorial to show you the kinds of effects you can get using layers, textures & gradient maps. You can use the image provided or an image of your own choice.

Open your image in Photoshop |
![]() |
Right click and 'Duplicate' layer |
![]() |
Click 'OK' |
![]() |
You now have a new layer. |
![]() |
Then go FILTER->ARTISTIC->DRY BRUSH |
![]() |
Then choose a filter to use, I used PAINT DAUBS, my settings were BRUSH SIZE=7 SHARPNESS=3 BRUSH=SIMPLE |
![]() |
<-- It should look similar to this |
![]() |
Next we want to adjust the BLENDING MODE of that layer, I set mine to OVERLAY (you can set it to whatever your preference is) |
![]() |
It will now look something like this, making the filter more subtle. Then, I duplicated that layer, creating another layer of the orginal image. |
![]() |
Next I used a FILTER on the new layer, but this time FILTER -> BRUSH STROKES -> ANGLED STROKES, you can see the settings I used |
![]() |
Now I want to take some of the colour out, so on the bottom layer, I did IMAGE -> ADJUSTMENTS -> DESATURATE |
![]() |
Next, on the top layer, Click the 'Create new fill or adjustment layer' icon - I used 'GRADIENT MAP' |
![]() |
You can see the gradient I used. |
![]() |
Then set the new Gradient Map Layer'S BLENDING OPACITY to PIN LIGHT. |
![]() |
I repeated steps 13-15 again but using a different gradient. |
![]() |
Now set the blending mode of this layer to Color, and Fill to 67% |
![]() |
Next Click the 'Create new fill or adjustment layer' icon , and use 'CURVES' |
![]() |
I used settings on RGB, INPUT=54 OUTPUT=77 |
![]() |
Your image will look something like this. |
![]() |
Then set the new Curves Layer's blending mode to SOFT LIGHT |
![]() |
I then used a Gradient Map inbetween the 2nd & 3rd layer, using steps 13-15, except setting the gradient layer on SOFT LIGHT rather than PIN LIGHT, and FILL to 66% |
![]() |
Ending up with this final effect. |
All of the above you can change depending on the image you use, filters etc, it's just to give you a general idea.
I went on and did these next few steps to change it further.
![]() |
I created a new layer, and then filled it with a green, then set the blending mode to OVERLAY, AND FILL=64% |
![]() |
Now I want to frame the image, by creating a border, so I create another new layer, then SELECT - ALL |
![]() |
Then on that layer, EDIT -> STROKE |
![]() |
Settings OUTSIDE, AND 5PX, you can choose whatever size/colour border you prefer. |
![]() |
The SELECT - DESELECT |
![]() |
And this is the final image. |
Of course, you can add brushes etc if you want to, this was really just to show the kind of effects you can achieve by layering etc.
I hope you find it useful. :)
